Yaisou!

We drove through Umbria to Ancona and drove right onto the car ferry that would deliver us to Greece. The car ferry was in fact a 12 storey cruise ship and the 16 hour overnight journey was relaxing and would have been worthwhile just for the sunrise over the watery horizon as we sailed past the heel of Italy.  Arriverdeci Italia!

We are staying this week in a beautiful Ionian seaside town on the island of Lefkada.  Hot and sunny everyday and so hiring a boat for two days seemed like the perfect activity.  We sailed around the neighbouring islands, from cove to bay to grotto, dropping the anchor and swimming at each one.  Many of the island's coves havebeach tavernas and as you approach in your boat or dinghy a waiter will catch the rope and help moor the boat.

Today is a national holiday - feast of the Holy Ghost - and it seems that most of the locals have gone to the monastery for a day of festivities and celebration.

The island of Lefkas

The location loved by my Huckleberry friend for
as you can see fron our breakfast balcony a boat
can be moored at the front door step.

Lovely beach tavernas dot the island

We hired a little boat for two days hopping
around the neighbouring islands, coves and grottos.

Onassis's Skorpios Island. This is the beach hut
he built for Jackie.

A good sailing breeze kicks up in the afternoon - sailors love it.

Kefalonia's very pretty harbour

Ithaka harbour
Beautiful Kefalonia - made me want to read
Captain Corelli again
Ithaka fishing
Even on tiny islands there is a taverna.  Just pull your boat up to
the edge and someone from the taverna will catch the rope and
secure it.  Then its just a few steps to lunch or a cool drink and some shade.
Papanikolis's Cave.  During WW2 a Greek Navy captain
hid his submarine there!

Just park your boat beside your table
